Merthyr Tydfil Crossroads-Caring for Carers is a local organisation established in 1995 providing respite breaks to carers and their families. We are a registered charity and are affiliated to the National Association of Crossroads Schemes, which has over 30 years experience of supporting carers.

This year we at Crossroads Merthyr Tydfil celebrate 13 Years of Caring For Carers of Merthyr.

The aim of the project is to both provide advise and support to people who have a diagnosis of Dementia and their Carers and to provide empowering activities to those diagnosed with the condition, and thereby periods of respite for their Carers.

The project will provide information and advice, signpost and refer to mainstream services and coordinate Carer training respite. The project will also provide group activities for beneficiaries with dementia, increasing confidence, self-esteem and empowering individuals to maintain their independence and quality of life.

Carers of people with dementia will be able to benefit from periods of respite, reducing their levels of stress and enabling them to maintain their caring role.

People with dementia and their Carers will be able to access information and support on the condition, improving the quality of life, confidence and opportunities available to individuals and their families.

Merthyr Tydfil Crossroads-Caring For Carers is managed by a Voluntary Management Committee which is composed of people who have professional expertise in the role of caring and also in the financial and legal aspects of managing such a scheme.

We are based at 11 & 12 The Green, Trefechan and the office is open between 9.00am and 5.00pm Monday – Friday. An answerphone is in operation at other times.

Day to day management is undertaken by a full-time Scheme Manager/Care Manager and a part-time Administrative Assistant.

Care Workers are carefully selected, fully trained and regularly supervised. They are sensitively matched to the carer and family, and once a placement has been made it is usual that the same Care Worker continues to provide continuity of care.

All Care workers will undergo a disclosure check through the Criminal Records Bureau, to ensure their suitability to work with vulnerable people.

Now employ 44 members of staff, 38 care workers provide an average of 350 care hrs weekly, gained Croquet level 1 and working towards level 2, achieved registration with CSIW and undergone first inspection visit.
